Bungonia
State Recreation Area
Bungonia State Recreation Area
is approximately 25min drive from Mandelsonıs of Goulburn and
covers a strip of the Southern Tablelands from the spectacular
limestone of Bungonia Creek southwards along the escarpment
to the west of the Shoalhaven River. The recreation area is
one of NSWıs oldest conservation reserves. Sections of the park
were first protected as a water reserve in 1872. Lands were
later reserved for the preservation of caves in 1902. There
are plenty of activities for visitors including bushwalking
and taking in the views from the numerous vantage points around
the escarpment edge. Three lookouts are easily accessible via
a short walk from a car park. Adams and the Lookdown offer level
access whilst Jerrara Lookout is reached via a short steep path.
Disabled facilities are available at David Reid and Adams Lookout
car parks and it is just a short distance from David Reid to
Bungonia Lookdown suitable for disabled access with assistance.
A range of short walks (up to 30min) and longer walks are also
available. Adventure caving is one of Bungoniaıs best known
activities - the caves here being amongst the deepest on the
Australian mainland. They should only be entered by well equipped,
experienced cavers. Please note that anyone undertaking bushwalking
or other adventure activities at Bungonia, must complete the
visitor intentions register at the park office prior to setting
off.
